Delivering Constructive Feedback: An Essential Workplace Skill

Constructive feedback is a cornerstone of team development. Yet, it’s a skill many find challenging to master. Done well, feedback can inspire growth, strengthen relationships, and enhance overall performance.

Here’s how to get it right.

  1. Be Specific: Vague feedback can lead to confusion. Instead of saying, “You need to improve,” pinpoint the exact behaviour or result that needs attention. For example, “Your reports are thorough, but adding visuals could make them even more impactful.”

  2. Balance Positives with Areas for Growth: Feedback doesn’t have to be entirely critical. Highlighting what’s going well alongside areas for improvement ensures the recipient feels valued and motivated.

  3. Focus on the Behaviour, Not the Person: This helps keep the conversation objective and reduces defensiveness. For instance, “I’ve noticed deadlines are being missed” is more constructive than “You’re unreliable.”

  4. Invite Dialogue: Feedback should be a two-way conversation. Encourage your team member to share their perspective and collaborate on solutions.

  5. Follow Up: Feedback isn’t a one-and-done event. Regular check-ins show your commitment to their development and reinforce progress.
